About Us
Criminal Justice Alternatives (formerly ReEntry, Inc.) is a publicly funded non-profit 501(c)3 corporation. The history of CJA, has been one of constant evolution as the organization assesses and responds to the urgent need for new, innovative, and effective programs in Wake County, and North Carolina criminal justice systems. New programs are adopted wherever there is a chance to provide common sense, workable alternatives to incarceration while at the same time protecting the public's safety and freedoms.
The idea of ReEntry, Inc. originated out of a federal halfway house in 1977. A group of concerned criminal justice professionals and other Raleigh citizens sought to address the immediate need to relieve overcrowding, contain costs, and avoid needless jail terms. This initial project, known as the Community Treatment Center, was transferred to the Salvation Army in 1986.
Early in 1981, ReEntry initiated a Pretrial Release supervision program for Wake County. This program has grown to become one of the organization's most valuable and successful services to Wake County. Pretrial Release, now called Pretrial Services is designed to offer an alternative to cash bonds, thereby removing any economic inequities in the bond system, as well as reducing jail population. Pretrial Services also promotes community service, restitution and drug rehabilitation.
In 1998 Capital Area Teen Court was started with a funds from the North Carolina General Assembly. Teen Court is a program that gives youth between the ages of 9 and 17 who have committed a misdemeanor offense, a second chance, while still holding them accountable for their actions. Currently Capital Area Teen Court is funded by the Wake County Juvenile Prevention Council, and through the Scheick-Verrochi Family Foundation.
In 2018, Wake County chose ReEntry, Inc to administer the Pretrial Monitoring Program. The purpose of program is provide Electronic GPS or Continuous Alcohol Monitoring, so ordered by a Superior Court Judge, a District Court Judge or a Magistrate, and to provide an enhanced level of safety for Wake County citizens and surrounding communities while safely reducing the Wake County jail population.
